Lord, What Wilt Thou Have Me to Do? Part 1

Wherefore be ye not unwise, but understanding what the will of the Lord is.  (Ephesians 5:17)

Many times throughout a Christian’s life, he may wonder, “What does God want me to do? What is His will for my life?” We will always have times when we wonder what God would have us do with our lives. Does He want us to take that job or end that relationship? Is He really calling us to the mission field or to be a preacher?

Sometimes, God reveals His will to us quickly; other times, we have to spend a long time praying and waiting for Him to tell us what step to take next. What do we do in the meantime? A wise preacher once said, “When you don’t know what to do, do what you know to do.” God’s will for our lives isn’t only in the big decisions; He has everyday tasks for us to accomplish that are just as important to do as the big things. Often, God will not reveal His will in the big things until He sees us being faithful in the small things.

He that is faithful in that which is least is faithful also in much: and he that is unjust in the least is unjust also in much. (Luke 16:10)

Let’s take a closer look at several of the “least” things God wants us to be “faithful in”:

First Things First—Accept Christ as Savior

For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Saviour; Who will have all men to be saved, and to come unto the knowledge of the truth. (1 Timothy 2:3-4)

The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance. (2 Peter 3:9)

God’s will for everyone is to accept His Son, Jesus Christ, as their personal Lord and Savior. If you are seeking to do God’s will in your life but you have never accepted His Son as Savior, then you cannot accomplish anything for Him until you do. Look unto me, and be ye saved, all the ends of the earth: for I am God, and there is none else. (Isaiah 45:22)

For those of us who have already accepted Christ, the Bible does tell us several things that God would have us do:

Be Thankful

In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you. (1 Thessalonians 5:18)

God’s people ought to be the most thankful. We have accepted Christ as Saviour and now have eternal life. We have the promise that God will never leave us nor forsake us (Hebrews 13:5). It does not matter if we have everything we want; in Christ, we have everything we need. Christians should be thankful in everything; it is God’s will for our lives.

Be Witnesses

Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: (Matthew 28:19)

And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature. (Mark 16:15)

And said unto them, Thus it is written, and thus it behoved Christ to suffer, and to rise from the dead the third day: And that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in his name among all nations, beginning at Jerusalem. And ye are witnesses of these things. (Luke 24:46-48)

Then said Jesus to them again, Peace be unto you: as my Father hath sent me, even so send I you. (John 20:21)

But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth. (Acts 1:8)

If Christ thought it important enough to command us to be witnesses five times in five different books of the Bible, maybe we ought to listen and obey. We should be seeking to be witnesses to the lost everywhere we go, even to the uttermost parts of the earth. There is no place to stop.

Be Good Employees

Servants, be obedient to them that are your masters according to the flesh, with fear and trembling, in singleness of your heart, as unto Christ; Not with eyeservice, as menpleasers; but as the servants of Christ, doing the will of God from the heart; (Ephesians 6:5-6)

As employees, we may not be “servants” in the literal sense, but it is not too much of a stretch to say that this verse applies to employees. It is God’s will for us to be good and faithful employees to our bosses. We are to obey the rules of our job, not to be noticed or congratulated, but simply because we understand that we are really serving the Lord when we are “serving” our employers.

Be Faithful to Church

Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching. (Hebrews 10:25)

In a day when many are using any excuse they can to miss church, we must remember that it is God’s will for us to be present at church whenever the doors are open. Church should be the reason we miss other things; it should never be the other way around. God wants His people to plan their lives around what is going on at His church, not try to fit church in as long as nothing “more important” is happening.

As we can clearly see, we have a lot of work to do if we want to be doing God’s will. Next week, we will discuss more of the everyday tasks that God would have us do. Until then, may we seek God’s face daily, asking, “Lord, what wilt thou have me to do?” And may we do it.
